Pronounced bi (rising tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Bi refers to a house that is low in the center, where one might hide. Another interpretation suggests it refers to a low house.
Zuo Zhuan (Zuo Zhuan): Palaces were low and simple.
Also pronounced bin (level tone) according to Jiyun and Yunhui, and pronounced bu (level tone) according to Zhengyun; the sound is the same as bei.
Guangyun: Refers to low-lying terrain.
Guoyu (Guoyu): Ponds are low-lying and collect water, capable of gathering beautiful things.
Yangzi Fayan (Fayan): One with a low status, like Zhang Yi and Su Qin.
Yupian: Refers to short or small in stature.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): The people there have full muscles but are short in stature.
Jiyun: Pronounced pi (falling tone), the sound is the same. Youbi is the name of an ancient state.
Mencius (Mengzi): He was enfeoffed in the state of Youbi.
Also used as a phonetic loan for the character for nose.
Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu): Previously, Xiang was enfeoffed in the state of Youbi.
Annotation: Youbi is the name of a state. It is located north of Yingdao County in modern-day Yongzhou, Hunan.
Jiyun: Pronounced pin (level tone), the sound is the same as pi. Refers to a female quail.
Erya (Erya): Among quails, the male is called que, and the female is called bi.
Also used as a phonetic loan for the character for assist.
Xunzi (Xunzi): The Son of Heaven used this as an aid.
