Hai Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Fish (yú) Character: Er Kangxi strokes: 17 Page 1468, Entry 01 Pronounced er. According to the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to fish roe. In the Discourses of the States (Guoyu), it is said: "Prohibit the taking of small fry and roe." The commentary notes: "Kun refers to fish roe; er refers to fish that have not yet fully developed." Also found in the Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lu (Lushi Chunqiu): "Among the fine fish are the dace of Dongting and the roe of the East Sea." The commentary notes: "Er is the name of a fish." Also pronounced rou. The meaning is the same.
