Explanatory Note (Shuowen): Ashamed. Composed of the heart radical and the phonetic component representing sound.
Xu says: The heart feels broken and discouraged.
Small Book of Etymological Glosses (Xiao Erya): A heart feeling ashamed is called nǜ.
Master Yang: Regional Dialects (Fangyan): In the regions east and west of the mountains, to be personally ashamed is called nǜ.

Zhang Heng: Rhyme-prose on Thinking (Si Fu): I am cautious morning and night as if facing danger, to examine my errors. If my inner nature is upright and straight, there is no one who does not know me and I feel no shame.
