History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Biography of Huo Qubing: Using short-range weapons, fighting fiercely at the foot of Mount Gaolan. Commentary: Ao refers to bitter, intense combat resulting in the mass killing of enemies. It is also the name of a mountain; see the notes for the character ao (鏊) provided previously.
