Comprehensive Geography of the Empire (Yitongzhi) states: The Zhi River is located northwest of Lincheng County.
Biography of Zhang Er in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan) states: Beheaded Yu above the Zhi River. The commentary by Su Lin says: Zhi is pronounced qi. Jin Zhuo says: Inquiring of the local people, it is pronounced di. Yan Shigu says: Both the explanations of Su and Jin are correct. Su gives the pronunciation as the qi in qijing, which is pronounced zhi and yi, as in ancient pronunciations. Jin gives the pronunciation as the di in gendi, which is pronounced ding and ji, which is how the local people call it today.
