Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Clothing sewn with needle and thread.
Erya (Erya): Shiyan: Zhǐ means sewing.
Guo commentary: People today call sewing clothing zhǐ.
Sub-commentary: Zheng commentary on the Official Vestments (Sifu) states: Fu, fu, chi, and xiu patterns are referred to as zhǐ, meaning embroidery.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Officials, Official Vestments (Sifu): When sacrificing to the gods of soil and grain and the five domestic spirits, one wears the xi crown.
Commentary: Sometimes written as zhǐ.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Derived from the character for embroidery with the symbol for grass (zhuó) in abbreviated form.
Xu Xuan says: Zhuó means numerous, referring to the fact that needlework is not limited to a single type of task.
