Pronounced xue.
In the Classic of Documents (Shujing), specifically in the Announcement of Duke Shao (Shaogao): Use caution and awe regarding the precarious state of the people. The commentary notes that this refers to the dangerous and precarious nature of public sentiment. The Correct Meaning of Characters (Zhengzitong) states that it refers to the uneven and disparate nature of the people's feelings, conveying a sense of dangerous unpredictability. The commentary by Kong Anguo interprets this as the common people exceeding the bounds of ritual and righteousness, which is incorrect.
Also pronounced yin. The meaning is the same. The Correct Meaning of Characters (Zhengzitong) states that this is equivalent to the characters for cliff or rocky cliff.
