Biography of Ban Gu in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu): The neighborhood gates were nearly a thousand. Note: The Zilin dictionary says: Yan is a gate in a neighborhood or lane.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Hereditary House of Goujian: Although Zhuang Sheng lived in a remote neighborhood, he was famous throughout the state for being incorruptible and upright.

Yangzi Fangyan: Yan-shan means to open. In the eastern Qi region, opening a door is called yan-shan.
