Categorized Compendium (Leipian): A name of a river. It originates at the foot of Yangcheng Mountain. Another theory suggests it refers to the rising and falling of the ocean tides. Ocean waves in the morning are called tide, and in the evening they are called ebb.
East Sea Fisherman's Discourse on Ocean Tides (Donghai yuweng haichao lun): The great earth floats upon the sea, rising and falling with the intake and discharge of breath. When the earth descends, the water of the vast sea flows into the rivers, which is called the tide. When the earth rises, the water of the rivers flows back into the vast sea, which is called the ebb.
