Pronounced xu (rising tone)
According to the Explanation of Words and Phrases (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the name of a jade. Also used in personal names.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the Records of Wu (Wuzhi) mentions Xue Zong, whose son was Xu.
According to the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), the Biography of Arts in the History of Jin (Jin Yishuzhuan) mentions Bu Xu.
Textual Research:
The Jade Chapters states: The Records of Wu mentions Xue Cong, styled Xu.
We have carefully examined the Records of Wu; it contains Xue Zong, not Xue Cong. Zong's son was Xu, who served as General of the Southern Might; he was not styled Xu. The original text of the Jade Chapters is erroneous. We have corrected Cong to Zong and styled to son based on the Records of Wu.
