According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), it is a red-feathered sparrow. It originates from Yulin. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is a bird similar to the kingfisher but red in color. According to the Record of Strange Things (Yiwuzhi), the kingfisher is shaped like a swallow; the red and male bird is called fei, while the green and female bird is called cui.
