Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui) record the pronunciation as xiájiǎqiè. Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) records the pronunciation as hújiāqiè. The pronunciation is the same as the character xiá. Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a kuì, meaning a box.
