According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a very small water flow. It is also the name of a river. In the Tribute of Yu (Yugong) from the Book of Documents (Shujing), it is recorded that the Ying waves had already gathered into a marsh. In the Offices of Summer from the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), it is noted that in the region of Yuzhou, the rivers include the Ying River and the Luo River. It is also the name of a commandery, Xingyang. In the Comprehensive Explanation of Geography (Dilítōngshì), it states that Xingyang belonged to Henan Commandery during the Han dynasty, and corresponds to the present-day counties of Xingyang and Xingze in Zhengzhou. It is also the name of a mountain. The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) states that beyond the southern seas lies Mount Ying, which is the source of the Ying River. Pronounced yíng.
