Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining and Analyzing Characters): The divine enjoyment of the aroma of food offerings. Xu says: The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records that the Zhou people valued aromas; during sacrifices, they poured fragrant millet wine onto the ground. It is also said that when the aroma of the sacrificial offerings is rich, the spirits enjoy the scent first. Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes: The Lord on High enjoys this in peace.
