Book of Odes (Shijing), Qi Odes: How does one split firewood?
Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances (Yueling): It is recorded that in the late autumn, when vegetation withers and leaves fall, one may cut down timber to burn into charcoal.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Earth Officer, Superintendent of the Fields (Dianshi), Commentary: It states that thick timber is called xin. Additionally, grass may also be referred to as xin.
Mencius (Mengzi): It mentions destroying its firewood and trees.
Zhao Qi Commentary: It explains that this refers to the concern that they would damage my firewood and trees.
Furthermore, the gathering of firewood is also referred to as xin.
History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Treatise on Penal Law: It is recorded that after a criminal is sentenced, they serve the chengdan chong labor service; after three years, they are transferred to the guixin baican labor service.
