According to the Shuo Wen Jiezi (Analytical Dictionary of Characters), xiao yao means to soar or hover. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zheng Airs section: "Roam freely by the river." Also, xiao yao is used interchangeably with the characters meaning to melt and to shake. According to the commentary on the Zhuangzi chapter Free and Easy Wandering (Xiaoyao You), Huang Jifu says: Xiao means to melt. Just as the sun causes ice to melt, though it consumes the ice, the essence is not depleted. Yao means to shake. Just as a boat moves upon water, though there is motion, the interior is not harmed.
