According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), it is the name of a bird similar to a quail. In the Erya: Explaining Birds, it states that the quail is also called a wuwu. In the subcommentary to the Monthly Ordinances section of the Book of Rites (Liji), She Ren states that the character wu is written without the bird radical, and that it is phonetically equivalent to mouwu. In Zheng Xuan's commentary to the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), it is also written without the bird radical. See the detailed notes under the entry for quail.
