According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a jade of three colors. Xu states that the three colors are vermilion, deep green, and white. In the Extensive Accents (Guangya), it is defined as a type of jade. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Summer Offices, section on the master of ceremonial caps, it describes the decorative ribbons for feudal lords as being made of nine groups of jade stones of three colors. The commentary notes that the character for stone is written as this character. It is the name for an inferior quality of jade. The sub-commentary explains that because it has three colors and is not a beautiful jade like the fanyu, it is designated as a name for inferior jade.
