Pronounced xi. According to the Shuowen Jiezi dictionary, to inhale through the nose. Alternatively, to gather one's breath. As stated in the Tao Te Ching (Daodejing), if one wishes to contract something, one must first expand it. As stated in the Huainanzi (Huainanzi), opening and closing, contracting and expanding, each has its proper method.
Also identical to the character meaning to gather or harmonize. In the Book of Han (Hanshu), regarding the biography of Han Yanshou, it refers to the commandery being stable and harmonious. In the biography of Kuang Heng, it refers to collectively turning toward benevolence and virtue.
Also appearing in the Book of Odes (Shijing) as in the phrase expressing a noisy, bustling atmosphere; the Book of Han (Hanshu) records this as in the Xunzi (Xunzi), it is written as.
Also interchangeable with the character meaning to胁 (intimidate or coerce). In the work Yingjian by Zhang Heng, it describes seeking advancement and stooping to seek favor, expressing that one does not wish to shrug one's shoulders in a fawning manner. The commentary notes that this character also carries the meaning of coerce.

According to the Guangyu Ji, it was known as Xin'an during the Jin Dynasty and She Prefecture during the Sui and Tang Dynasties; it is currently a county under the jurisdiction of the prefecture.
