According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a mountain. The original form was written with the radical for mountain and the phonetic component qu. Now it is written as 嶇. According to the Expanded Rhymes (Zengyun), it describes an uneven mountain road. Another source defines it as a steep mountain. In the Westward Expedition Rhapsody (Xizheng Fu) by Pan Yue: The carriage tracks wind and tilt in uneven paths. It is also used interchangeably with a variant form (qi). In the Rhapsody on the Capital of Wei (Weidu Fu) by Zuo Si: Mountain mounds accumulate and rise steeply.
