Also a surname. Tongzhi (General Records), Clan Gazetteer section, states: The Pei clan originates from the Ying surname, descendants of Boyi. The grandson of Feizi of Qin was enfeoffed in the territory of Pei, and thus took the place name as their surname. The sixth-generation descendant, Ling, was enfeoffed as Lord of Xieyi during the reign of King Xi of Zhou, at which point the radical for city was removed and replaced with the radical for clothing. There is also a Pei clan in the Western Regions.
Also peihui, which is interchangeable with paihuai (loitering or pacing back and forth). Book of Han (Hanshu), Biography of Prince La of Yan, states: Pacing back and forth between two canals, the gentleman resides alone.
