Pronounced fei (rising tone). According to the Shuowen Jiezi, it refers to distinguished writing or patterns. The Book of Changes (Yijing) states: The superior man changes like a leopard, his patterns are radiant. Note: In the current version of the Book of Changes, in the Revolution (Ge) hexagram, the character is written as wei instead of fei. Also, in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Xiao Ya: Elegant and refined, forming this cowrie-shell brocade. The commentary states: Qifei refers to patterns interlaced with one another. The Zhu commentary states: It is the appearance of small patterns. Also written as the variant form fei. In the Book of Odes, Odes of Wei: There is an elegant gentleman. In the Great Learning (Daxue), it is written as fei. Also, pronounced fei (level tone). A surname. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), twenty-third year of Duke Xiang: Originally, Fei Bao was a servant. Also, pronounced bei (level tone). The meaning is the same.
