Pronounced pi. Meaning to attach, to increase, or to thicken. Book of Odes (Shijing): Administration and affairs only increase my burdens. Also, a high wall is called yuan, and a low wall is called pi; both are walls. Poem by Du Fu: The courtyard walls are lined with bamboo and wutong trees ten fathoms high.
Also, pronounced pi (rising tone). Refers to low-lying and damp places. Discourses of the States (Guoyu): Pine and cypress do not grow in low-lying ground. Sima Xiangru: Zixu Rhapsody: Where it is low, damp, and wet, there grow rushes and reeds.
Also, pronounced bi (rising tone). One hundred acres of land is called a pi.
Also, pronounced pi (falling tone). Pi ni refers to the small, crenellated parapet walls on top of a city wall. Identical in meaning to pi, bei, and bi.
