Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) states it means to drag or gather. Also, to pull. To take. From the Mencius (Mengzi): The Five Hegemons were those who coerced the feudal lords to attack other feudal lords. Also, according to the Fang Yan (Dialect) by Yang Xiong, to embrace or hold is called lou. From the Mencius (Mengzi): One who climbs over the wall of an eastern neighbor and pulls their maiden toward him. We note carefully that the statement that to embrace or hold is called lou does not appear in the Fang Yan (Dialect) by Yang Xiong. Furthermore, in the two instances of the character lou in the Mencius (Mengzi), the Zhao commentary defines them both as to pull. We have hereby corrected the entries regarding the drag and pull definitions, as well as the passage regarding the Mencius (Mengzi), to now state: The Erya (Approaching Elegance) defines it as to gather. The commentary notes it is like saying to gather or cluster. It also means to pull. From the Mencius (Mengzi): One who climbs over the wall of an eastern neighbor and pulls their maiden toward him. Also, the Five Hegemons were those who coerced the feudal lords to attack other feudal lords.
