Page 1376, Entry 30
Pronounced ling.
As stated in the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the falling of rain. Derived from the radical for rain, it is pictographic in form. The Book of Odes (Shijing) states: The falling rain is misty. Note: In the current edition of the Odes of Bin, this is written as the character for zero.
As defined in the Jade Collection (Yupian), it means to fall.
As defined in the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it means to drop.
It is also used interchangeably with the character for spirit (ling). In the Stone Drum Inscriptions, it is written as spirit rain rushing. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wey, it is written as spirit rain already falling. In this instance, it is written as spirit. The commentary notes that spirit signifies goodness.
