Jade Chapter (Yupian): This is an ancient form of the character for mound. Detailed notes are found under the Mound (fù) radical, eight strokes.
Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi): To transcend. The character is composed of the radical for walk slowly and the component representing height. Another interpretation relates to the meaning of the character itself.
Xu Kai Annotations: Ling means to incline or extend gradually. The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) states that Mount Tai is so high that a lame ewe can graze upon it, which is due to the gradual inclination of the mountain slopes. The character was originally written with the radical for person.
