Pronounced ling.
In the Broad Rimes (Tangyun), it is pronounced ling. In the Collected Rimes (Jiyun) and the Compendium of Rimes (Yunhui), it is pronounced ling. According to the broad dictionary (Boya), it means to gallop. Another meaning is to pass through. From the Ocean Rhapsody (Haifu) by Mu Hua: Floating on the sea and crossing over mountains.
Also interchangeable with the character meaning to bind (leng). According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), entry on the explanation of words, it means to tremble. The commentary notes that it means to fear and tremble. The sub-commentary states that Cang (a scholar) says it means to tremble. Guo (Pu) says that it means to fear and tremble, therefore the sound and meaning of this character and the variant are the same.
Also a river name. According to the Geography Chapter of the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), there is a Ling County in Sishui Commandery. Ying Shao says that it is where the Ling River originates.
Also a surname. In the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), there is Ling Tong of Wu. It is distinct from the character for ice (ling).
