Pronounced lì.
In the Pianhai (Sea of Characters), a dengli is made of bamboo. That without a handle is called li, and that with a handle is called deng.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiao Ya): Carrying the straw raincoat and the bamboo hat. The Commentary says: The bamboo hat is used to protect against the heat.
Commentary on the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan): War chariots had no covers; the basket-maker would hold a bamboo hat and stand by the wheel hub to protect against cold and heat, which was called the bamboo hat hub.
Also a place name.
Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), sixteenth year of Duke Ai: The Viscount of Yue attacked Wu; the Viscount of Wu resisted him at Lize, lining up on both sides of the river.
Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing Zhu): Lize is located to the south of Wu, around the Song River.
