According to the Tang Pronunciation (Tangyun), pronounced luo. In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is described as a type of crow. In the Approaching Elegance (Erya), specifically in the Interpretation of Birds section, it is identified as a lu. The commentary by Guo notes that it is a water bird, resembling the yue but with a short neck, with purple and white abdomen and wings, and a green back; in the region east of the Yangtze River, it is called a lu.
Additionally, according to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced ge. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced ge. In the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is identified as a ji. In the Approaching Elegance (Erya), specifically in the Interpretation of Birds section, it is identified as a ji. The commentary by Guo notes that today in the region east of the Yangtze River, the owl is called a ji. It is also referred to as a qu-lu.
