Pronounced lu. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the same as the character for filter. It means to strain dry or to seep through. It is sometimes also written in a variant form (zhuàn). It also refers to clear water. As stated in the Eastern Capital Rhapsody (Dongjing Fu) by Zhang Heng: The clear water is tranquil. It also refers to a river name, located in the east of the Xiang region. As stated in the Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing Zhu), the Lu River in Liquan County is also called by this name. It also refers to the name of a lake. As stated in the Hymns for the Suburban Sacrifices from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), the vastness of the marshlands, thus they return.
