According to Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Anthology (Yunhui), pronounced lian. According to Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced lian.
According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a whetstone. Another definition states it is a red color. Also, there is the term lian-ren. In Hans Han's Exoteric Commentary on the Book of Odes (Hanshi Waizhuan), it is stated: There are four aspects to the path of humaneness; lian is the lowest. If one is humane in a lian manner, their virtue is not profound. The commentary explains: Lian means to be calculating or overly exacting in one's pursuit of humaneness; it is different from sage humaneness, wise humaneness, or virtuous humaneness.
