You Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Walk (chuò) 遴 Kangxi Strokes: 19 Page 1264, Entry 25 Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced lin (falling tone). According to the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen), it means to walk with difficulty. In the Biography of Du Qin from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it says: One cannot be negligent when things are truly difficult, and one cannot act with hesitation. The commentary states: Lin means difficulty. Also, the Jade Chapter (Yupian) defines it as greed. It is interchangeable with lin (niggardly). In the Biography of King Lu Gong from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it says: In his later years, he became greedy, always fearing he did not have enough wealth. The Treatise on Geography (Dili Zhi) states: The people of Yingchuan are greedy, litigious, and contentious. Additionally, the Guide to Proper Characters (Zhengzitong) notes it is pronounced lin (rising tone). It means to choose carefully. It refers to selecting candidates by comparing them with one another; thus, selecting talent is called linxuan. Also a surname. Note: Historically, the character lin was only used with the falling tone. The Guide to Proper Characters (Zhengzitong) classifies the meaning of walking with difficulty under the falling tone and the meaning of careful selection under the level tone, while asserting that the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) incorrectly omitted the level tone entry; the basis for this assertion is unclear.
