The Erya, Explanation of Palaces (Erya), states that nine thoroughfares are called a kui. The commentary notes that this describes where four roads intersect with additional side paths. In the Zuo Zhuan (Zuo Zhuan), Year 11 of Duke Yin, it mentions reaching the great kui. Du Yu's commentary notes that a kui is a road nine wheel-tracks wide. Also, Kuiquan, the name of a location in the state of Lu. In the Zuo Zhuan (Zuo Zhuan), Year 32 of Duke Zhuang, it mentions returning to reach Kuiquan. Also rhymes with qiu. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Nan, it states: spread out in the middle of the thoroughfare. According to the Shuo Wen Jiezi (Shuo Wen), the original form was kui.
