Pronounced ju (rising tone). A container for rice. Book of Odes (Shijing): With baskets and round hampers. Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): Officials of the Earth provide the ceremonial carriage, rice hampers, and fodder. Three Rituals Illustrated (Sanlitu): The ju is circular in shape and holds a capacity of five sheng. Commentary on the Book of Odes: A square container is called a kuang, and a circular container is called a ju.
Also refers to bundles of harvested rice, which are also called ju. Ceremonial Rites (Yili): Four bing are called a ju, and four ju are called a zong. Commentary: A bing refers to a handful of rice stalks held in the hand when harvesting. Ju is the name for these bundles of grain, similar to the bundles of harvested rice currently called ju in the Laiyang region.
Pronounced lü (rising tone). A vessel for holding cooked rice. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): Also refers to the same. Same as the variant form.
