Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is jing (falling tone). Shuowen Jiezi says: to summon. Yu Pian says: to decorate. Sima Xiangru, Rhapsody on the Upper Forest (Shanglin Fu): Wearing makeup and fine ornaments. Commentary states: Fine ornaments refers to white powder and dark eyebrow paint. Book of the Later Han (Houhan Shu), Account of the Southern Xiongnu: Abundant beauty and fine decorations. Guangyun states: An ancient official title, also written with this character. Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is jing (rising tone). Collection Rhymes (Jiyun) says: to summon. Collection Rhymes (Jiyun) says: another meaning is a woman’s appearance being calm and quiet. Also the same as the character for quiet (jing). Jia Yi, Rhapsody on the Owl (Fu Niao Fu): Tranquil as a deep abyss, quiet and still. Yang Xiong, Rhapsody on the Sweet Springs (Ganquan Fu): Gradually dim and quietly deep.
