Orthography Investigation (Zhengzitong) states that it is pronounced jiu, with the same sound as the word for maternal uncle. Wujiu is the name of a tree. It was originally written as wu. In Tang Materia Medica (Tang Bencao), it is written as wujiu. Chen Cangqi states: Its leaves can be used to dye things black. Its fruit can be pressed for oil, which, when applied to hair, can turn white hair black. When used as lamp oil, it is very bright. It is also called yajiu (crow's uncle).
In the poem Gathering Wild Vegetables by Lu Guimeng of the Tang Dynasty, it is written: While resting, I often rely on the shadow of the crow's uncle tree; while frequently picking, I see the heart of the tree peony flower.
In Meaning of Characters (Huilanziyi), it states that the common writing of the character as jiu is incorrect.
