Haoyao describes the immense and vast movement of water. Also, haohao refers to a broad and flat appearance.
Yangzi's Model Sayings (Fayan) mentions: Shangshu is haohao. Note: Haohao means boundless and endless. It can also be written in a variant form (hao).
Also, according to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), it refers to bean dreg juice. The Long Commentary (Changjian) notes that ancient rituals involved using bean dreg juice to wash hair, which is why this specific character was created. In Buddhism, this substance is used to bathe the body, and thus in the fourth and eighth lunar months, bean dreg juice is used to bathe the Buddha.
