According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a white appearance. According to the Five Sounds Collected Rhymes (Wuyin Jiyun), it refers to the air at the edge of the sky.
In the Songs of Chu (Chuci): The sky is white and haohao. Commentary: Haohao refers to a bright appearance.
In Ban Gu's Western Capital Rhapsody (Xidu fu): The clear and refined quality of the fresh hao air.
In the Former Han (Qianhan) Ancestral Temple Song: Western hao and the vast expanse. Commentary: Wei Zhao states this refers to the Western Shaohao.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written in the variant forms hao, hao, gao, and hao.
