Pronounced hao (falling tone). As defined in the Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Shuowen Jiezi), a type of rice. Yi Yin stated: Among the finest of grains is the hao of the Southern Seas.
Also pronounced hui. The meaning is the same.
Additionally, it is commonly used interchangeably with the character hao. It means to reduce, to spoil, or to be empty. In the Biography of Dong Zhongshu in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: Wasted and sorrowful, alas. In contemporary texts, it is all written as hao.
