Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): The francolin is a small bird similar to a turtledove.
Piya (Piya): It has white circular markings on its chest and often sings in pairs. It enjoys flying toward the sun and fears frost and dew, rarely appearing in the morning or evening. Sometimes, when flying at night, it uses leaves to cover its back. Its nature is to always face south, unwilling to go north; even when it flies in a circular path, it must first flap its wings toward the south, which is why it is also called the one that longs for the south. In the Jiangdong region, it is called the shadow-chaser. Its call sounds as if it is calling out to itself, saying: gou-zhou ge-zhe, xing-bu-de ye, ge-ge (meaning: hook, pulley, lattice, splinter, cannot walk, older brother).
Lin Tong Poetry (Lin Tong shi): Forest trees call out gou-zhou.
Commentary: The francolin calls to itself. See the detailed entry for the character zhe.
