According to the Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), pronounced gu. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Treasury (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced gu.
In the Explanation of Script and Explanation of Characters (Shuowen), it is defined as the sound of a small child crying. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), specifically the section Benefit and Success (Yiji), it is written, Qi wailed and cried. In Ban Gu’s Rhapsody on the Darkened Way (Youtong Fu), it is written, My mother heard the crying and carved the stone.
The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) notes a variant form exists.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced wa. The meaning is the same.
Also, rhyming with hu, pronounced hu. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), specifically the section Greater Odes (Daya), it is written, The birds had departed, Hou Ji wailed, truly deep and truly large, his voice filled the road.
