According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the gaps between wall partitions. It also refers to a dam used to block water. The Records of the Three Kingdoms (Weizhi) records that Liu Fu managed dam projects in areas such as Wutang to irrigate rice fields. It also refers to stone dams, such as those at the Kunming Pool in Chang'an. The Geography Gazetteer (Kuodizhi) records that the Feng and Hao rivers were diverted by dams into the Kunming Pool. The Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu) records that the Jiao River flowed west to the stone dam.
