In the Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is synonymous with fang (defense). In the Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lu (Lüshi chunqiu), it is stated: In the month of late spring, order the officials to repair the levees and embankments. It is also written as fang.
Furthermore, in the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihuibu), it is defined as an ancient form of the character for earth (di). In the Cangkangzi (Kangcangzi), Chapter on the Way of the Subject (Chendao pian), it states: The embankment gives birth to and resists things. Additionally, in the Chapter on the Complete Way (Quandao pian), it states: The tranquil person is the embankment of the Way.
