Zi Collection, Page Position: Lower Radical: Again (yòu) Cong Kangxi stroke count: 18 Page number: 167 Tang Rimes (Tangyun) and Correct Rimes (Zhengyun) give the fanqie pronunciation as the combination of cu and hong. Collected Rimes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) give the fanqie pronunciation as the combination of cu and cong. It is read as the level tone of the character pronounced zu. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains it as to gather or assemble. The character is composed of the elements zhuo and qu. The Book of Documents (Shangshu) contains the phrase: these gathered upon his person. It is also used as a surname. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, there was a regional governor of Chuzhou named Cong Tan. It also refers to the name of a terrace located in Handan. Collected Rimes notes it is sometimes written as a variant form pronounced cong. The Book of Han (Hanshu) in the Biography of Dongfang Shuo contains the phrase: gathering rare and strange things. It is also written as another variant form pronounced cong. The Book of Han in the Biography of Xifu Gong contains the phrase: thorny bushes growing thick. A note in the commentary on the Book of Odes (Shijing) states: shrubs are called cong. Rhyme Supplement (Yunbu) notes that in rhyming verse it is pronounced with the fanqie combination of cu and huang, sounding like the character pronounced chuang. In Han Yu's poem This Day is Truly Lamentable, the lines: Desolate for ten thousand miles, how can a meeting be encountered? The waters of the Huai flow leisurely, the mountains of Chu are directly clustered. In this context, the word for encountered is pronounced as fang to rhyme with cong. Rhyme Collection notes that later people mistakenly wrote it as the characters pronounced zou or zui; both are incorrect. Mr. Mao says: the upper part of the component zhuo consists of four vertical strokes, two long and two short. Writing it with the component guan is incorrect. In the original woodblock edition, the lower part of the component zhuo follows the component for sheep (yang).
