Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining and Analyzing Characters): A type of citrus.
Piya (Encyclopedia of Animals, Plants, and Minerals): A type of shaddock. The peel of the shaddock is extremely bitter and cannot be eaten, but the variety with a sweet peel is the orange. The orange can be presented (deng) and thus perfected, which is why the character is formed with the component for ascend (deng).
Sima Xiangru, Fu of the Imperial Park (Shanglin Fu): Yellow citrus, oranges, and mountain ash.
Jin Dynasty, Zhang Xie, Seven Commands (Qi Ming): Cooked with autumn oranges.

Book of Jin (Jin Shu), Biography of Wang Xianzhi: When the Lingyun Hall of the Wei dynasty had not yet been inscribed with its nameplate, the craftsmen nailed it up by mistake and could not take it down. They had Wei Zhongjiang hang on a bench to write the inscription. By the time he finished, his beard and hair had turned completely white.
