Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui): In the Book of Music (Yueshu), it is a bronze cymbal. It was crafted by Mu Shisu of the Southern Qi dynasty. It is several inches in diameter. Larger ones originate from the states of Funan, Gaochang, and Shule, reaching several feet in diameter. They are raised like floating bubbles and strung together with leather thongs to be struck for musical harmony. In the Tang dynasty court music and dharma melodies, there was music featuring the harmony of bronze cymbals.
Collection of Correct Characters (Zhengzitong): Also known as a bronze plate. When Sima Chengzhen composed the True Dao Song and the Great Luo Heaven Song, cymbals were used; these were likely the smaller variety. Today, they are still used to regulate music. Sometimes they are called grass seeds (caozi) or spread cymbals (pubo).
