Pronounced zi.
Name of a river. In Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing), it is noted that the Zi River originates at Mount Yuan in Laiwu County, Mount Tai.
Also the name of a prefecture. In Expanded Dictionary of Rhymes (Guangyun), it is noted that during the Spring and Autumn period it belonged to the State of Qi, in the Han dynasty it was Jinan Commandery, under Emperor Wen of the Liu Song dynasty it was changed to Qinghe Commandery, and in the Sui dynasty, Zi Prefecture was established. It was named based on the river.
Also the name of a county. In Records of Universal Geography (Guangyuji), it is noted that Zichuan belongs to Jining Prefecture, and Linzi belongs to Qingzhou.
Also used interchangeably with a variant form (zī). In Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), section Summer Offices, Office of the Regional Commissioner, regarding You Prefecture, it states its marshes are the Zi.
Also, the color black is called zi. In Book of the Later Han (Houhanshu), Biographies of Empresses, it states, kindness and favor are deeply united, thus forgetting the black decay. In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is noted that the common usage of a variant character is incorrect.
Textual research: It is commonly written as a variant form (zī). In Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), section Summer Offices, Office of the Regional Commissioner, regarding You Prefecture, it states its marshes are the Zi. Note that the character for time was added to the original text after the character for Zi.
