Broad Elegance (Boya): A cup.
Yang’s Dialect (Fangyan): Between the regions of Zhao and Wei, some call it zhan.
Commentary: A wine cup, the smallest type of cup.
Also pronounced zhan (third tone) to rhyme.
Ouyang Xiu’s Poem on Sending off Liu Yuanfu: With a fish-fin-shaped cup raised once, ten measures are enough to empty the zhan. Although such objects as reed pipes are small, the intent is not shallow.
Also, according to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), it was originally written as zhan. The variant form is written as zhan.
