According to the Classic of Etymology (Shuowen), it denotes a pure red color. It cites the Classic of Yu (Yushu) referring to Danzhu in this manner. Note that in the Scholarly Exegesis of Ancient Writing (Shu guwen xun) by Xue Jixuan, Danzhu is written as Danzhu using this character. Additionally, according to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), it also refers to a red silk fabric. It is also pronounced zhu, with the same meaning.
