Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is zhi (entering tone). It is read like cheng (entering tone). The meaning is to throw or to swing.
Expanded Rhymes (Zengyun) defines it as to cast away or to shake. It is the same character as zhi.
Book of Jin (Jinshu), Biography of Sun Chuo: He once composed the Rhapsody on Mount Tiantai (Tiantai shan fu) and showed it to Fan Rongqi, saying: Try throwing it onto the ground; it should make a sound like gold or stone striking.
Du Mu, Rhapsody on the Epang Palace (Efang gong fu): They treated precious tripods like iron cauldrons, beautiful jade like common stone, gold like clods of earth, and pearls like gravel, casting them aside everywhere. The people of Qin saw these things, yet they did not cherish them much.
